(…) Elodie Lesourd has produced a series of paintings that engage with black metal culture using poly- urethane paint and steel as materials. These paintings, using formal, material and conceptual means, offer hints and ask questions about the relationship between fine art and black metal (so-called high and low art) as well as the relationship between true ethical creativity and industrial/information age nihilism. They can be examined with this most important question in mind: given that perhaps it is no longer possible to consider either art or music as ‘ahead’ of the mainstream or as an ‘alternative’ to it, what kind of ethics is it possible to attach to creative activity, and could it be the same in both realms?

(...) Elodie Lesourd a réalisé une série de peintures ayant trait à la culture black metal, utilisant comme matériaux premiers la peinture polyuréthane et l’acier. Ces peintures, par le recours à des moyens formels, matériels et conceptuels, offrent des indices et questionnent la relation entre la créativité réellement éthique et le nihilisme à l’âge industriel /de l’information. Elles peuvent être étudiées avec cette question essentielle en tête : étant donné qu’il n’est peut-être plus possible de considérer l’art ou la musique comme étant « en avance sur » le courant dominant ou comme une « alternative » à celui-ci, quel genre d’éthique est-il possible de relier à l’activité créatrice ? Celle-ci peut-elle être commune aux deux domaines ?
